What to know about cycling in the city

As the weather improves, bicylcling provides an increasingly attractive and cost-efficient way of transportation over trains, buses and cabs. Whether you rent a Citi Bike or ride your own, riding through NYC can be quite enjoyable but requires vigilance due to the frenetic pace of other cars, bikes and pedestrians.

The rules of the road require cyclists to ride in designated bike lanes. However, too often locals borrow these lanes for double parking, truck deliveriesor or an opportunity to skirt around slow moving traffic.

Keeping alert and aware of these issues equates with preventing avoidable collisions and arriving safely at our destinations.

Whether you are in the city for a weekend or for life, here are some safety tips that can make cycling in the city an enjoyable and safe experience.

1. Stay alert and focused on the road - don't put both ear bud's in if you are listening to music

2. Stay in your lane - don't ride in the car lane or on the sidewalk

3. Obey the traffic rules - stop at red lights and signal when you turn

4. Know your route - don't cycle down a one way street down the wrong direction

5. If you are cycling for pleasure, take the time to research the places where you to find a nice relatively quiet path in park or by the river

6. Be as predictable as possible on the road - pick a pace and stick to it

7. Inspect your bike to make sure that it is safe to take out onto the road

8. Your bike doesn't need to have all the bells and whistles, but it does need lights and bells

9. Wear a helmet - it might look silly, but it can save you from a concussion or other head injury

10. Enjoy your ride

If you cycle in the city, you know how exhilarating it can be. You also know how that even if you follow all the rules of the road, the drivers might not. It's terrifying to ride right next to parked cars that can open their doors suddenly and knock you off your bike.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a cycling accident involving a car, you know that the injuries can be serious. It is crucial that you take action quickly to preserve your rights including but not limited to personal injury compensation. A successful legal claim can make all the difference as you pursue the financial resources you need and are entitled to for medical costs, pain and suffering, and other damages you have sustained due to a negligent driver.
