Mass-transit accident injures 34: Know what to do if you're hurt

A mass-transit accident is a shock. Most people believe that these incidents won't happen and that the transit authorities make sure that the rails are clear and that the vehicles are safe.

New York is no stranger to mass-transit accidents, though. In fact, as recently as June, there have been accidents leading to train crashes. Thirty-four people were injured in the crash reported on June 30 when a subway derailed due to a gouged piece of railing that was laying on the tracks.

Why did the crash happen? No one is sure.

The operator who saw the railing reported that it should never have been there and that he didn't know why it was. The steel piece may not have caused the disaster, but for now, it appears it did. It has been reported that the defective railing might have been there because of work that had been performed on the tracks. Crews had cut out a 26-foot piece and halved it, but they failed to remove the pieces from the tracks despite the breach in protocol.

In total, 34 people were injured as a result of this crash. Fortunately, those involved stayed calm and did not cause a stampede, which could have resulted in further injuries or deaths.

What should you do after a crash like this?

If this kind of accident happens to you, know that you're not alone. Many people have been through similar incidents. Afterward, it's important that you seek medical help immediately. Don't worry about the cost of medical care, as you may be able to seek compensation later on. The most important thing to do is to make sure you're healthy and cared for.

Mass-transit accidents don't happen often, but when they do, they're traumatic for everyone involved. Make yourself a priority, focus on your health and take the time you need to recover.
