New York fight leads to brain injuries; lawsuit settled

Many professional athletes spend a great deal of their time training for their next performance. While they are likely aware of their chances of suffering an injury, most have confidence in the fact that adequate medical care providers will be on scene to help. Unfortunately, the family of a boxer claims that such was not the case after a fight in New York resulted in brain injuries.

The fight occurred in New York in Nov. 2013. The plaintiff, a 36-year-old man, lost the fight in a unanimous decision. He was seriously injured in the bout. Despite post-fight medicals being performed, he was not sent to the hospital by ambulance. Instead, he made his way there on his own in a taxi.

At the hospital, it was determined that the man was suffering from a blood clot in his brain -- a diagnosis that was delayed by doctors' actions following the fight, according to the lawsuit. He underwent surgery, suffered multiple strokes and was left in a coma for weeks. He remains partially paralyzed in addition to being unable to walk or talk beyond mumbling. Following a lengthy investigation, the New York State Inspector General released a scathing report regarding the New York State Athletic Commission; NYSAC was also named as a defendant in the lawsuit.

New York has recently agreed to pay the boxer and his family $22 million as a result of the personal injury lawsuit filed in response to the man's brain injuries. Unfortunately, injuries such as these require extensive and often long-term treatment. In many situations, families are unable to cope with the expenses. If negligence led to a victim's condition, the person and his or her family may choose to file a lawsuit, just as this family did.
