New York personal injury claim results in $71 million award

Anyone who has been involved in a car accident likely knows that even a relatively minor incident can create serious aches and pains. Unfortunately, victims of major crashes in New York often suffer for the rest of their lives. A jury in New York has recently awarded the victim of a car crash over $70 million in a personal injury lawsuit.

The incident that led to the woman's injuries happened in an accident that occurred in Aug. 2012. According to reports, a man was driving a sports utility vehicle when he fell asleep. As a result, the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, striking a van. A 94-year-old woman in the van passed away, while the driver and a second passenger were transported the hospital.

A female passenger in the SUV suffered major injuries in the collision. According to reports, she has a spinal cord injury and a fractured back. Although she can now walk with the assistance of braces, her lawsuit claims that she will continue to need psychological and medical treatment. Following a three-week trial, a jury awarded her $71 million.

Because of the potential harm that can arise from a car accident, drivers must remain vigilant at all times. If a driver is experiencing fatigue, it may be necessary for him or her to take measures to ensure the safety of both passengers and others nearby. Unfortunately, the costs of dealing with the consequences of a crash such as this are often overwhelming, making it necessary for victims to file a personal injury lawsuit in a New York civil court as this woman was able to do successfully.
