3 tips to help you negotiate with an insurance adjuster

Imagine driving across New York on your way to work when suddenly, out of nowhere, another driver runs a red light and slams into the side of your car. Now, you have to miss work, figure out where to take your car for repairs and make a trip to the doctor to have your injuries assessed. The was certainly not how you intended to start your week.

Once you start the claims process with the other driver's insurance company, you will have to talk with the insurance adjuster. This person will attempt to assess the damage to your car and other property and offer you a settlement. Fortunately, you do not have to accept the first offer. With these tips, you can successfully negotiate with the insurance adjuster.

Don't let the adjuster pressure you

The insurance company is going to try to get you to accept the lowest possible offer. In order to do this, the adjuster might try to pressure you into settling as quickly as possible. Take your time and wait until you have received the bills for all of the expenses associated with the accident. This includes your car repairs, medical expenses and any other losses. Once you feel secure about the total costs, then tell the insurance company what you want in a settlement.

Prepare yourself

Before you have your first meeting with the adjuster, obtain a copy of the accident report that the responding officer filed as well as any medical bills that you have already received. In addition, research what your car's blue book value is in case the vehicle is a total loss.

Ask for more

Start the negotiations at a higher amount that what you really want. This will give the insurance company room to try to get you down to a lower amount, the one you want. Also, keep in mind that if you suffered an injury, you could experience future problems. If that happens, you may not be able to get any more money than what you received in the original settlement.

If you have suffered an injury due to a car accident with a negligent driver, the above tips can help when it comes time to negotiate with the insurance adjuster. If you have problems filing your claim or the insurance company denies it, you might be able to take legal action and fight for the compensation you deserve.
