Citi Bike: When exercise is dangerous

2018 is Citi Bike's fifth year in business, and it's quite a success. In September 2017, for instance, the bike-share program allowed around 4.3 million gas-free miles to be traveled throughout the city.

This public transit system is relatively new, but it's doing well. One concern, though, is for people using these bikes getting to and from their destinations safely. New York City does have over 1,000 miles of bike lanes, and with more cyclists on the roads, drivers are more likely to be watching out for them. So, the real question is, "Is biking safe on New York City's streets?"

Citi Bike's success in New York

Early into the program, there were no fatalities. Then, one fateful day in 2017, the first fatality came from a Citi Bike accident in NYC. How can you avoid adding to that toll?

Citi Bike NYC suggests first getting its app and then planning a sensible route to get where you want to be. There are different routes for individuals who are or are not comfortable with traffic, and the app even shows the safest way to travel at the time.

Before you get any Citi Bike, you do need to do a pre-ride check. This check makes sure the bike is in good condition. Make sure the tires aren't flat, make sure the brakes have resistance and adjust the seat to the right height. If there's something wrong with the bike, you can simply hit the red button on your app, showing that the bike needs repairs.

One of the most important things you can do is to wear a helmet, even if you don't think you'll be in harm's way. Even if you are not in a crash but fall off the bike on your own, there is a potential for hitting your head and suffering a brain injury or other injuries.

Finally, get to know the traffic laws and make sure you follow them. You should always be focused on the road and avoid distractions when you're riding. You should follow the same traffic rules as other drivers while biking, so you get to your destination without life-threatening injuries.

It can be safe to ride a bike, but you have to be prepared. There's always a potential for a Citi Bike accident, but with a helmet and other preparations, you can be as protected as possible when that happens, so you can reduce the risk of death.
